Pune is most popularly known as “Knowledge City (Vidyanagari)”
of Maharashtra.
It is located about 140 Km. from Mumbai. It has a population of more than 3 million
and is fast developing city. It has got huge industrial establishments all around
the city like Bharat Forge, TATA Automobiles, Chemical industries and many more.
It has also a major IT Hub of Maharashtra like Hinjewadi IT Park. It has a huge
industrial estate at Chakan just 25 Km. at its north-west. It has major Air Force
establishment.
Presently, their is one airport of Indian Air Force at Lohegaon, with a civil enclave
managed by Airports Authority of India. The traffic at present is about 2 million
per. The civil operations at existing airport are restricted and therefore, the
traffic is not growing on this airport.
The GoM has therefore, taken a decision to develop altogether a new Green Field
Airport near Rajgurunagar about 35 Km. on the north-west of Pune city.
MADC is acquiring about 3300 Ha. of land from various villages at a cost of about
Rs. 1200 Crores.
This airport is proposed to be developed as a full-fledged international airport
with "Code-F" standards and over a horizon period of 30 years is estimated around
20 millions passengers per year.
The estimated cost of this airport including land acquisition & commercial development
is to the tune of Rs. 7000 Crores.
